Presents|Presence

While in Sydney last July I was struck by a most serendipitous occurrence wrapped in a larger case of happenstance. As luck would have it, my brief 4 day metropolitan escapade coincided with the opening of the city wide Sydney Design  expo, as well as Edward Burtynsky's "Australian Minescapes" and "Shipbreaking" series at the Australian Centre for Photography. SCORE! While viewing Burtynsky's monumental and tortuously beautiful prints, I looked down on the gallery floor to find a tiny matchbox wrapped in a blue ribbon.

Over the years I've learned not to question my unremitting curiosity. Just go with it. I found a tea bag tucked inside with a question marked paper tethered to the string in lieu of a label. A tiny anonymous gift, oh joy!! After some inquiry I found the source to be ACP featured artist/designer, Sonya Gee. Her Matchbox Project had a personal and quaint beginning but quickly went global with their anonymous positive interventions if you dare to indulge your curiosity. I took 6 boxes from her display to disperse on my travels. Dropped one on the Manly ferry, one at Fresh Garden in Coolangatta, one on the train from San Diego to LA, one at LAX, gave one to a friend to drop on his travels, and one at Ted's Bakery.
I was infinitely inspired by this gesture and began to wonder how to morph it into my own project and make it more Hawaii relevant. We hear often about our "unique geographic positioning" but what does that mean in this era? How can we better represent and proliferate hawaii tourism beyond ABC store hula girl lighters with illuminated nipples. How isolated are we really, mentally physically, culturally, artistically? whats the pos and neg of it all? With these and many more questions in mind, I hope to collaborate with any willings participants to develop this project and tackle the following goals.
1) assert a positive but informative presence of Hawaii at large...the issues it faces (past and contermporary) and the art that gets made here.
2) bolster community involved in the project
3) be ambassadors of aloha abroad
4) no purchasing of materials(reused/repurposed only), strive to adhere to LNT philosophy (i.e. if no one picks it up will it turn to a toxic waste issue)
the list goes on. stay tuned

I am haunted by my duel nature as a modern day consumer tech loving gal and avid outdoor spaces goer/supporter. Attempting to shed some guilt and bond these personalities through art.

PROTOTYPE
thank you netflix for feeding my anxiety with the useless tearaway flap on every movie recieved. 3 movies per shipment @ a rate of roughly 2 exchanges a week=24 red tearaway flaps a month. time to put their sleek design and vivid color to good use.

Thank you exchange student from third grade for teaching me origami pirate hat and box making. Although I forgot your name years ago, I will never forget your lesson.
Eventually this will also contain a message to spark investigative curiosity which can be sated by visiting a website full of art, aloha, and Hawaiian knowledge nuggets....maybe?
